Cops: Man charged in bias attack at East Meadow golf course

Cops: Man charged in bias attack at East Meadow golf course, A Long Beach man was arrested Thursday charged with attacking a fellow golfer with his golf club after spewing racial slurs at the man and his companion, Nassau County police said.

Grant Smith, 48, of 242 W. Bay Drive, who police described as a white male, was reportedly playing golf alone at Eisenhower White Course inside East Meadow’s Eisenhower Park. Police said just after 9:30 a.m., Smith came upon two black men who were golfing at the public course. He then made “rude comments” to the 65-year-old and 66-year-old men at the third hole, cops said.

The two men, who police did not identify, continued to play at the course as Smith played behind them. At the fifth hole, Smith began to yell at the men and then called them “racial slurs,” police said.

Police said Smith turned violent and “struck the 65 year old victim with a golf club in the left calf.” The force of the impact caused the head of the club to break off, said police. Smith then allegedly threatened to stab the other golfer with his broken club. The men backed away and called police.

The man who was hit with the golf club was taken to an area hospital to be treated for a contusion to his calf, according to a police news release.

Detectives said Smith fled the scene and was arrested Thursday at his Long Beach home. He was charged with two counts of second-degree assault and two counts of second-degree menacing. After being held in police custody overnight, Smith is scheduled to be arraigned Friday at First District Court in Hempstead.
