Tornadoes, blizzard conditions and flooding, Tornadoes, blizzard conditions and flooding top the list of Michigan weather events on this day in history.

From the National Weather Service archives here are the weather events that happened on April 12.

1940 – Cold air prevails across Lower Michigan. Muskegon, Grand Rapids and Lansing all set new records for the coldest high temperatures for the date.

All three cities observe a high temperature of only 30°. Flint and Houghton Lake and Alpena see a record chilly reading of 29°. Detroit observes a record 28° for their high temperature.

1972 - A tornado put down an intermittent damage path about four miles long southeast of Ludington in Mason County. A barn was destroyed, but there were no injuries.

1974 - A tornado brief tornado damaged a building in Vicksburg in Kalamazoo County.

1976 - The overnight temperature dropped to 18° in Detroit, which is the record low temperature for the day.

1977 - The very next year in Detroit, the daytime in temperature rose to 89°, which is the record high temperature for the day and for the month of April! Other record highs for the date include Grand Rapids 82°, Lansing 83°, and Flint 81°.

1996 - Thunderstorms with rain and sleet broke out over the southern U.P. with 4.2 inches of snow falling at Weather Forecast Office in Marquette.

2002 - Rain continued into the morning with more than 2 inches falling on the thick snowpack and swollen rivers in the western U.P. in a span of 48 hours. The rain combined with 4 inches of snowmelt caused basements to flood in Ironwood and water collected in the low spots.

2008 - A winter storm developed over the Plains and tracked northeast into the Upper Great Lakes. The storm dropped widespread heavy snow across Upper Michigan from the evening of the 10th into the afternoon of the 12th.

Blizzard conditions also occurred over the Keweenaw Peninsula on the morning of the 11th. An observer in Bark River near the Delta/Menominee County line measured nine inches of snow in 24 hours.

Gladstone in Delta County recorded a total of 2.25 inches of water equivalent precipitation during the event from early on the 11th through the morning of the 12th. An observer in Iron Mountain measured five inches of snow in 12 hours.

The National Weather Service in Negaunee Township reported a storm total snowfall of 17.5 inches ending on the morning of the 12th.

Water equivalent precipitation from the storm measured 2.90 inches including a daily record of 2.22 inches on the 11th. Northeast winds also gusted over 30 mph at times during the event.
