Pet foods recall: New recall by Natura Pet expands recalled pet foods

Pet foods recall: New recall by Natura Pet expands recalled pet foods, More dry pet foods are being recalled by Natura Pet Products because of a risk of salmonella infection to both people and animals, The Associated Press reported April 19. This is a new recall that follows previous pet food recalls in March.

This new Natura Pet Products recall includes all dry pet food products and treats with expiration dates prior to and including March 24, 2014, the company said. This includes dry dog food, dry cat food and dry ferret food and treats.

The pet food brands included in the new pet food recall are Innova, EVO, California Natural, HealthWise and Karma.

The pet treats being recalled are Innova Cat Treats, Wild Cravings Turkey & Chicken Formula Cat Treats, Wild Cravings Herring & Salmon Formula Cat Treats, and Wild Cravings Weight Management Cat Treats.

Natura Pet canned products and Mother Nature biscuits are not affected by this new pet food recall.

Natura Pet Products, a unit of Procter & Gamble Co., first announced a voluntary recall in March of its dog foods, cat foods and ferret foods because they could be contaminated with salmonella bacteria.

“We are sorry for the disruption, but we simply want to ensure that every product meets our highest quality standards,” Natura Pet Products said about the recall on its website.

Animals that eat contaminated products can contract salmonella. People who handle pet products contaminated with salmonella can also contract the salmonella infection. The risk is higher for people who don’t thoroughly wash their hands after handling pet food products.

Contact your veterinarian if your pet has consumed any of these products or shows symptoms of salmonella infection. Symptoms of salmonella infection in animals can include lethargy, diarrhea, vomiting, decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain.
