When the man (name withheld by request) who lives in the rural town of Springfield, Maine received a collect call from the Penobscot County jail shortly after 9 p.m. on April 11, he realized that a legitimate collect call would have identified the caller.

According to Springfield man, he could here garbled voices in the background and was given the option to either press 1 to accept the call, or to hang up to refuse it.

According to the Consumer Fraud Report website, this scam is known as the Prison Inmates Phone Scam. Prison inmates call unsuspecting residents and try to trick them to accepting a collect call from a nearby jail.

If the resident accepts the call a long distance phone call is placed by the inmate and the charges for the phone call are charged to the resident’s phone.

One group of inmates in Florida made over $50,000 worth of calls at the expense of unsuspecting residents, says the Consumer Fraud Report.

Residents are cautioned not accept collect calls from jail unless they know the person who is calling. If you notice charges or your phone bill for calls you did not make, call your phone company and explain the situation.
