Dearborn Heights observes 50th birthday with April 8 cake-cutting at City Hall, The mayor cut a large cake shaped like the outline of Dearborn Heights' borders, to mark the half-century mark since the city was founded on April 8, 1962.

A sizable crowd of residents jammed the City Council chambers last week to join in the birthday party celebrated by city officials and the Dearborn Heights Anniversary Committee. The event included remarks by the mayor, as well as recognition of the winners of a citywide fourth grade essay contest.

“One of the things the (Dearborn Heights 50th Anniversary) Committee was so insistent on, we wanted to duplicate as much as we could from that time 50 years ago” Mayor Daniel S. Paletko joked. “And we found out—and let me read—what the weather was like.

“There were 'Showers every hour,' it was 'cloudy.' We even duplicated the weather!” the mayor noted.

In introducing the mayor, committee member Michele Kramarz told the audience that the anniversary cake made by Karen Kasprzyk offered a choice of flavors between banana nut cake, banana cake, cherry nut cake, white marble cake with raspberry, yellow cake and chocolate cake. The round cake bearing the city seal was carrot cake with cream-cheese frosting.
