Cops: Man arrested for attempting to sexually assault child during home invasion, A 24-year-old man allegedly attempted to sexually assault a child who police said woke to find him burglarizing her home Thursday morning in Athens.
Still, police on Friday said they have captured the man who committed the crimes.
Around 3:40 a.m., officers responded to report of a burglary at the home off Lexington Road, according to Athens-Clarke County police.
Investigators said the burglar entered the home through an open window and began to remove items from the home while everyone was still sleeping.
It’s unclear how many people were inside the home and police have not provided any details on what the burglar took.
“A juvenile in the house awoke to the perpetrator standing over her and the suspect made statements to her before fleeing the house,” police spokeswoman Ms. Hilda Sorrow said.
Investigators an investigation immediately and identified the suspect as Mr. Rashard Blackshear, of 285 Lexington Heights, Ms. Sorrow said.
He was charged with burglary and criminal attempt to commit child molestation, she said.
Police have not said what the man stole nor how they were able to link the suspect to the crimes.
