Chicago sinkhole: 1 injured, 3 cars swallowed as hole expanded

Chicago sinkhole: 1 injured, 3 cars swallowed as hole expanded, A Chicago sinkhole emerged Thursday morning as a driver tried driving around it, but it expanded before he was able to escape it. Inquisitr reports April 18 that the driver was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital with a minor head injury and is said to be in stable condition.

The southeast Chicago sinkhole is believed to be the result of a water main break and heavy rainfall. Fire department officials said by the time they arrived, two additional cars had fallen into the hole.

Chicago Water Department spokesperson Tom LaPorte said torrential rainfall caused the water pipe to burst. The size of the hole was substantial -- covering the entire width of the road and parts of the sidewalk and grass. It was a good thing no one else was harmed. Authorities said the cars were seen from a distance piled on top of each other.

Sinkholes have been a problem around parts of the nation in recent months. There have been a significant amount of rain impacting residents. Floods have occurred in house basements and flights have been canceled due to the stormy weather. News of this sinkhole will make people there more alert to sudden and unpleasant surprises.
