5-year-old shoots, kills 2-year-old sister with rifle

5-year-old shoots, kills 2-year-old sister with rifle, A 5-year-old boy shot and killed his 2-year-old sister while playing with a children’s rifle, the Lexington Herald-Leader reported April 30.

The 5-year-old boy was playing with his .22-caliber Crickett rifle when he accidentally shot and killed his younger sister, Kentucky State Police said on Tuesday afternoon.

The fatal shooting of the 2-year-old girl, identified as Caroline Starks, occurred in Cumberland County, Kentucky, at a home on Lawson's Bottom Road, police said.

The 2-year-old was taken to Cumberland County Hospital after being shot by her brother. She was later pronounced dead. An autopsy has been scheduled for Wednesday.

Cumberland County Coroner Gary White said that the children’s mother was at home when the shooting occurred.

The 5-year-old received the gun as a gift last year. The gun, White said, is a Crickett rifle, a type of rifle made specifically for children.

White said the gun was kept in a corner, and that the family did not realize a shell had been left in the Crickett rifle.
