Reese Witherspoon pulls celeb card when she's arrested for disorderly conduct, When most people hear about a celebrity who’s been arrested for “disorderly conduct,” they don’t think about Reese Witherspoon, but the Oscar-winning actress was arrested Friday morning.
The story broke Sunday shortly before Witherspoon was due to appear on the red carpet for a movie premier.
A state trooper had pulled over the car Witherspoon’s husband, James Toth, was driving and was in the process of giving him a sobriety test when the trooper said Witherspoon refused to stay in the car during the test.
The first time Witherspoon got out of the car, the officer told her to get back in and she obeyed; the second time, the officer said he warned her she’d be arrested if it happened again.
As the test continued, the officer said Witherspoon hung out the window and taunted him, saying he wasn’t a real police officer.
“I told Mrs. Witherspoon to sit on her butt and be quiet," Trooper First Class J. Pyland wrote in a report of the incident.
After the sobriety test, Toth was arrested for driving under the influence and failure to maintain the lane.
Witherspoon then got out of the car and asked what was happening. The trooper asked her to get back in the car, but she told him she was a U.S. citizen who was allowed to “stand on American ground,” according to the police report.
At that point, the trooper arrested her. She initially resisted but Toth was able to calm her down.
Witherspoon also reportedly asked the trooper if he knew who she was, then told him, “You’re about to find out who I am,” and “You’re about to be on national news.”
The couple was taken to jail after that.
Witherspoon was charged with disorderly conduct. According to Variety, which initially broke the story, a court appearance is scheduled for Monday at 8 a.m. in Atlanta Municipal Court, but Witherspoon and Toth’s attorney is expected to show up and request that the court date is postponed.
