Prison riot 13 dead: Violent riot between inmates leaves at least 13 dead, A prison riot broke out Saturday morning in the La Pila prison in San Luis Potosi. The inmates had sharp objects and other improvised weapons and at least 13 inmates dead and 65 more were wounded, Reuters reported on April 27.

According to the digital version published by the Mexican newspaper Milenio, the rioting started in a cell block. The prison riot began about 05:00 local time, so there was an intense presence of police and Mexican military.

The number of deaths, according to Milenio, was confirmed both by the Attorney General and by the local Mexican Secretariat of Public Security.

Authorities gained control of the situation shortly after the riot started. Reuters stated that Concepcion Tovar, head of the state's prison system, told press and media outlets that at least 100 inmates were involved in the riot.

The riots and escapes from prisons in Mexico, many of them overcrowded and high levels of police corruption, have been a constant in recent years due to members of rival cartels fighting each other or managing their bands from prison.
