Police search for answers after 3-year-old found shot to death in Sumter home

Police search for answers after 3-year-old found shot to death in Sumter home, A 3-year-old child died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound earlier this week in Sumter. And police are still investigating to determine if anyone should be charged.

So far, police have not released the name of the child nor have they said who else was at the home at the time of the shooting.

Around 10 a.m. on Tuesday officers responded to Magnolia Manor Apartments at 530 South Pike Road after getting a report of the shooting, Sumter police said.

"Upon arrival officers discovered the 3-year-old child in the apartment with an apparent gunshot wound," police spokesman Deputy Chief Alvin Holston said.

The residents told police the child fired the gun after finding it.

But police didn't say where the child found the weapon and it was unclear why it wasn't secure.

The investigation is still ongoing, Mr. Holston said.

“Firearm owners are responsible for making certain the firearms in your home are not causally accessible to anyone, especially young children," he said.
