Mississippi damages from severe March hailstorms nearing $210M

Mississippi damages from severe March hailstorms nearing $210M, Mississippi's Insurance Commissioner released new information this week on the severe hailstorms that pummeled many counties around the state including the Jackson metro area back in March.

The Mississippi Insurance Department reported Wednesday (April 24) that at least $209.4 million had been paid out by insurance companies for home and auto damage from the hailstorms on March 18.

The figure takes into account over 15,000 homeowner claims and nearly 40,000 auto claims.

Commissioner of Insurance Mike Chaney expects the numbers will increase more and will probably exceed 60,000 claims.

“Companies continue to work with consumers as quickly as they can and again MID has had very few complaints about the claims process,” Chaney said.

Insurance companies will report updated figures to the Department on May 1.

Hailstorms hit more than two dozen counties across the state with the largest hail stones measured in the Jackson metro area.
