Man commits suicide during standoff after walking to the side of I-575

Man commits suicide during standoff after walking to the side of I-575, A 30-year-old man shot and killed himself early Sunday morning during a standoff with officers on I-575 in Cherokee County.

So far, police have not released the man’s name and the motive for his suicide remained unknown. It was also unclear if anyone witnessed the incident, which happened around 7:30 a.m.

The incident unfolded southbound on I-575 between Canton and Sixes road, according to Holly Springs police.

Investigators said the man exited his vehicle, walked across the interstate and entered the wood line where he sat down.

“He sat there for a couple of hours while Woodstock police and Cherokee County negotiators tried to talk to him and then he shot himself,” Holly Springs police spokeswoman Lt. Tanya Smith said.

According to media reports the man was wearing a bulletproof vest when he placed the gun to his head.

It’s unclear if he said anything before firing the gun and it's unclear if he left any evidence that indicated the reason behind his intentions.
