24 IRS workers' theft charges: Current and former employees face prison, Indictments came Wednesday, April 17 on 24 IRS workers' theft charges in Tennessee. The Associated Press via ABC News shares that two dozen current and former employees of the Internal Revenue Service are in hot water over accusations they illegally received benefits. All are facing the potential for substantial jail time over the alleged thefts.

The IRS employees are accused of taking over $250,000 in food stamps, housing vouchers, welfare and unemployment insurance payments. Thirteen of those charged face up to five years in prison over charges they lied about being unemployed as they applied for benefits. The others face sentences that could be simply probation or as much as 12 years in prison over charges of theft of property.

All of the 24 IRS workers facing theft charges are from Tennessee or Mississippi, and they range in age from 28 to 64. The reports regarding the indictments did not detail how the 24 IRS workers' theft was discovered, or how the current and former employees may be linked together.
